Sponsor/Client: Trinity Senior Living Communities / Livonia, MI
Production Company: Nemeth Marketing, Inc. / Clarkston, MI
Producers: Julie Nemeth, Wally Szczubialka; Director: Julie Nemeth
Other Credits: Cinematographer: Wally Szczubialka; Editor: Jeff Larkin
Orange Dragin / Troy, MI; County Indiana Police

Production was managed by Michigan-based Nemeth Marketing, Inc. The scripting was developed in conjunction with Homeland Security’s Communications Staff and the St. Joseph County, IN) Police Department to ensure accuracy of tactics and messages utilized by actors/actresses. The production was filmed on location at the senior living communities Sanctuary at St. Paul and Sanctuary at Holy Cross located in South Bend, IN.
The film was made to educate and train TSLC employees so they have the tools to save as many lives as possible during an active shooter or hostage taker situation. In research to obtain active shooter training materials, TSLC’s Human Resources Director was unable to find a training resource specifically developed for the unique needs of a senior living setting. In addition, executive management wanted employees to understand their role as a caregiver and protector in an active shooter situation. There was a very unique message that needed to be delivered to employees that they should “make every reasonable attempt” to save lives while not endangering their own. That message is a bit different from a faith-based, corporate culture where TSLC staff are considered called to the “individual-first” work of elder care. TSLC’s Human Resources Staff was able to obtain grant dollars for the video’s entire production. The video also will be made available and specifically branded for other senior living, corporate entities.

In 1918 German and South African war-horses, no longer needed, were released into the burning Namibian desert. How could they survive, in one of the world’s most beautiful, parched and rugged landscapes? Miraculously, they have held on to this day, constantly crossing the desert in search of sparse patches of grass, returning for water to the single well built in colonial days, sharing it with perfectly adapted oryxes - while marauding spotted hyenaspatrol close by. Far inland, in ghost towns long since abandoned by the diamond industry, snakes, lizards, chameleons and dew-drinking beetles compete for food among the drifting sands. Along the coast from the abandoned factories hundreds of thousands of seals come ashore to breed, their babies mercilessly hunted by jackals and brown hyenas. Just 200 metres away on Halifax Island, a colony of black-footed penguins enjoy a carefree life, protected from every predator.

The Anergui Valley, near Zaouïa Hansala in the Tadla Azilal region, is ringed by mountains and difficult to get to. They’re, these still-strong, living traditions continue to thrive. This is where we propose to film the preparations, with their rites handed down from time immemorial, before filming the wedding ceremony itself, with its characteristic chanting and dancing. We will use two teams to capture the happenings in the bride’s and the groom’s families. The mountainside, with its dominant pink rocks, is a spectacular backdrop to this. The work of the women, ancestral in the detail of their gestures, shows off the symbols that determine belonging to a tribe, as do the costumes, jewellery and patterns on the carpets. The men are tasked with buying all that is necessary for the ceremony to be successful. We’ll be following them through the souk in this way travelling through time and through its fabulous colours.

"BP'S THE ENERGY WITHIN - MARLOU" (UNITED KINGDOM)
CERTIFICATE
CORPORATE: Public Relations

Entrant: PSONA Films / London
Sponsor/Client: BP plc / London
Production Company: PSONA Films / London
Executive Producer/Copywriter: Katy Eyre; Producer/Creative Lead: Tom Boden

The Energy Within, BP’s new positioning of its support of Paralympic and Olympic sport was created in the run up to the Rio 2016 Games. It built upon London 2012’s achievement in allowing disabled athletes to be defined by what they could do, not what they couldn’t. The Energy Within provided an even more potent approach, its essence being: “The human spirit is the most powerful energy of all, it’s the fire that burns within, that keeps you going when others stop”. It leveraged the idea that athletes have a certain energy within that propels them to the top of their game, something that keeps them going when others fall by the way side. PSONA Films were asked to produce a suite of online films to support BP’s Energy Within campaign. This first film, showcased the energy within Marlou Van Rhijn, a triple world record holder as well as Paralympic, World and European champion, whilst at the same time highlighting BP’s partnership with the International Paralympic Committee.
A key consideration in the creative treatment was to hold the viewer’s attention, ensuring they didn’t click away within the first 5 seconds. This was achieved by opening on a droplet falling in super-slow motion through the air. It looks and feels like it’s alive with an inner energy as it constantly changes in its descent. As it moves past the body of Paralympic athlete Marlou Van Rhijn, also moving in slow motion, it becomes clear that the droplet is her bead of sweat. When the bead finally splashes in slow motion on the running track, the film moves into explosive real time sprinting footage of Marlou in her running blades. After a further interchange between slow motion and real time we cut to a close up of Marlou after completing her sprint, another bead of sweat falls from her chin and we end with the final captions accompanying Marlou at final rest. Throughout the film a voiceover reveals what it means to have The Energy Within, what it can achieve and how proud BP is to help Paralympians discover their own Energy Within so that they can be the best they can be.

The film was shown to great acclaim on the big screens at the Doha World Athletics Championships in October 2015. The event was a key staging post on the road to Rio 2016 and the last major event at which so many top Paralympians would compete on a single stage. As such it had a huge potential to highlight BP’s proud support of IPC and individual athletes. Overall the film had 65 million online views in 2015.

PSONA Films were asked to produce a suite of online films to support BP’s Energy Within campaign. The objective of this film, Meet the Team, was to not only communicate the breadth of paralympic athletes being supported, but also the strong team aspect of BP’s partnership. The intention was to also reinforce the shared affinity between the IPC and BP as well as help to re-configure perceptions of paralympic athletes.
The film aimed to showcase the breadth of BP’s support for Para sport by featuring a selection of the 24 athletes supported around the world. The one minute film communicated the idea that when the world’s best athletes come together on the world’s biggest stage in Rio, many will discover an energy within they didn’t know they possessed. With limited digital paid support, the film had to be as inspirational, and shareable as possible. Meet the Team employed similar editing techniques and followed a similar structure to the first film featuring Marlou Van Rhijn. The same voice artist provided further continuity. It builds slowly from the opening, before a trigger, in the shape of an arrow being fired, changes the pace of the music and editing. This builds into a crescendo where athletes cross finishing lines in victory, having located their energy within.

Production Company: Quite Frankly Productions / London & Bangalore
Producers: Lies Deneys, Sitara Menon, Guatam Shaw
Other Credits: Director: Lies Deneys; Cinematographer: Gurvinder Singh
Editor: David Arshadi; Sound: Devendra Singh & Ram Singh

Our aim with this series is to showcase Diageo’s initiatives first-hand, and prove how the projects are making a difference. Credibility and authenticity for the work that is being carried out is key, and is demonstrated through the voices of those directly affected by specific projects that we visited. We needed to create content that would be emotionally engaging, and draw the viewer in to the series as a whole. We did not want our work to look too “corporate” or be classed as overly-branded. Editorial tone needed to be strong. Since filming in India, we have also visited Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia. Further countries are planned for this year. Sustainable Development is central to Diageo’s purpose - Celebrating life every day, everywhere - and their company programmes showcase the ways in which a global organisation of the size of Diageo can make a difference at a local level.

Cinematographers: Vincent Chan, Spencer Chan

MOK Ho-kwong (Yeah man) is a famous environmental promoter in Hong Kong. His grandmother , CHAN Wai-fong, is a hundred-year-old lady. In order to have a better life through marrying into a wealthier family, Chan accepted an arranged marriage to a grocer’s son as a concubine when she was 17. She started off with a mild dislike about her husband’s appearance with a big bearded face, but then moved by the clothes given by the man. She then moved to Hong Kong from the countryside in the Mainland, where she raised her five children. When the husband passed away, even love was at the time unbeknownst to her, the memories persisted still made her cry all day long throughout that year.
Arranged marriage is beyond the understanding of Yeah man (MOK Ho-kwong) who was born in the 80’s. As a grandson, his thoughts and attitude towards marriage part ways with his grandmother’s. He actively approached Rachel (CHENG Pui-san), a social worker, who shared similar values with him. They lead a simple life after getting married. They never purchase luxurious gifts for each other, instead, they hand-make thoughtful gifts. They reside in the countryside where they cook with firewood, and plough and sow on their own. A simple life that resembles the grandmother’s old days before her marriage, but such vapid life still offers joy to the couple. However, for the grandmother and grandson, only the long-lasting fidelity to love holds on even generations pass by.

They say education is the lone treasure in the world that cannot be stolen from anyone. In a country where millions live in extreme poverty, it is inspiring to know that there are children who, despite the odds stacked against them, remain passionate in their search for knowledge. Among them are Jherlyn and Cedrick, two kids who call the bus terminal in a busy seaport their home. Being homeless however, did not hold them back from being honor students in their respective classes. They barely have enough to eat, yet they are rarely absent from school. To make ends meet, they juggle some odd jobs on weekends – swimming alongside boats that are hauling the day’s catch to scavenge for dead fish on the fishermen’s nets, and offering cleaning services to city buses parked in the terminal where they sleep. Reporter Tricia Zafra witnesses the children’s dedication to defeat the cards they have been dealt with so early in life, in their struggle to reach for their dreams

The Trip. Arriving at one of the UNESCO World Heritage Cities in Spain, I was surprised and fascinated by the fantastic information I received. A little dazed, I entered the city and into its secrets, guided only by curiosity and without taking a set path. I found great beauty and succumbed to it. I interacted with people and shared their customs, eat their food and sometimes danced at a concert. I always fall for each Spanish World Heritage City. I have taken many selfies, photographed my emotions and shared them.

Executive Producers: Shunichi Maruyama & Masayuki Takase

This documentary is a detailed portrait of Hiroaki Mitsuya, the Japanese doctor who spearheaded the development of the world’s first medication to treat AIDS, and focuses on the untold story behind his pioneering research three decades ago. Although Mitsuya has been nominated for the Nobel Prize, he has never agreed to allow a TV crew to cover him, until now. Our reporting delved not only into his achievements as a researcher, but also his amiable personality and other qualities that define him as a person.
Through unique computer animation and a production design inspired by chemical formulas, we bring to life the historical facts surrounding the discovery of the first AIDS medications, and explain the mechanisms behind HIV and the drugs to treat them. And we weave in interviews with people who were involved at the time to trace the twists and turns that led to Mitsuya’s groundbreaking discovery. Today, antiviral chemotherapy is making remarkable progress. In portraying the doctor who helped to lay the foundation for this, the program points to a model for scientists and clinicians to follow.

The theme of the film “Dubrovnik and Time” is the passage of time (fast, slow, natural). We perceive time, and especially we remember it in a different way depending on experiences we live. Dubrovnik never stops. So it’s never the same. Nor maintains a uniform speed, and so provokes emotion: awe of children, the attraction between two young people, the intimacy of a dinner next to the sea. It just seems still when we look at it from the air. But we now know that its inside never stops beating.

In a remote town in the Philippines, a simple lifebuoy literally carries the only hope of several children for a better future… public school teacher, Elizabeth. To reach her students in a community of an indigenous group in Mindoro Occidental, Teacher Elizabeth has to trek up mountains and cross five rivers twice a week. There are no boats or bridges available so to cross each river, Elizabeth rides on a lifebuoy tied with a net of ropes, which is then pushed by a local ferryman across the raging current. It is a scary and dangerous trip, but the dedicated teacher remains unfazed. For Elizabeth, this ordeal is nothing compared to the situation of her students and their families. Being isolated and with very little livelihood options, the locals have remained very poor. Students make do with a makeshift classroom. Residents light up the dark at night with only a single lamp. To alleviate their suffering a little, Elizabeth holds feeding programs for the children, making sure their stomachs are filled before their minds are nurtured. Despite the hardships, Elizabeth remains not only an anchor, but a real lifesaver not just to her students, but their families as well.

Long legs, tall neck, wide eyes - giraffes are the beauties of the African savannah. But there is so much more to these gentle giants: their exceptional body, their distinctive behaviour, their secret social life. So far, giraffes have barely been more than decorative extras in wildlife films, towering over the savannah. Our production takes a fresh look at these tallest animals of all, revealing brand new details about the secret lives of this true African icon. We present giraffes in the savannah of Kenya, in the South African grassland as well as in the desert of Namibia. The visual style is very different to the usual approach: amazing camera perspectives, a fresh way of framing and stunning points of view, together with spectacular, never before seen material will add up to a comprehensive and entertaining portrait of Nature's High Society.

The US Constitution is the oldest written national constitution still in use today. For over 200 years it has stood at the center of American political life and been celebrated by people from all walks of life and across the political spectrum. But it has also been the subject of vast disagreements, beginning almost the moment it was signed in Philadelphia in 1787 and continuing to this day. The Constitution Project seeks to make this central document, and the ideas and struggles that shaped it, accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. The series explores the conflicts that have not only formed the Constitution but have influenced how we understand and interpret it. This documentary explores Magna Carta, one of the most important documents in the history of democracy and the inspiration for the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. "HER WAR: WOMEN VS ISIS" (RUSSIA)
SILVER SCREEN
DOCUMENTARY: Documentary Programs: Cultural Issues

Entrant: RT / Moscow

The town of Serekaniye in Syria is the last major town bordering the “Islamic State”. The mainly Kurdish local population is determined to fight the murderous ISIS and prevent them from entering their town. The Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) were formed after the Syrian Army’s attempts to combat the jihadist threat failed. Among its fighters are young women, who chose to defend themselves and their families from the belligerent invaders. RTD visits a YPJ female training camp to learn about these courageous young women and to see how they train to face the enemy. Controlling vast areas of land in Syria and Iraq, and overseeing over 6 million people, ISIS is the single largest and most dangerous terrorist organization in the Middle East. After the Syrian Army failed to protect its citizens against the threat, the people were left with no one to defend them. In 2012, the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) stepped up to the cause. Within these civilian armed forces is the YPJ, an all-women military unit.
The women who join YPJ are varied. Coming from the typically poorer regions and families in the areas, girls as young as 16 join the group in order to fight for their country. Either with or without the permission of their families, some girls travel from as far away as neighboring Turkey in order to become YPJ fighters. There is only one barring requirement for new inductees, that they be unmarried. The reasons for these women to enlist in YPJ vary. Some are simply fighting for their country, while others are more idealistic. Such sentiments as equal rights, religious freedom, and a call for democracy can be heard throughout the make-shift training camp for new recruits. YPJ volunteers explain that ISIS fears them, as in that organization, death by a woman is said to send a militant straight to hell. So these women and girls leave their families and villages to fight for their land and their freedom.

The rule of law has been under constant challenge in the past year. As court cases related to civil disobedience finished legal processes, some results raised public outcry of injustice or bias. At the same time, there are sensitive cases being delayed in prosecution which led to query on the impartiality of the Department of Justice. To add on the controversy, Chinese officials denied the existence of any system of separation of powers under the Hong Kong Basic Law. Is the ‘rule of law’ really dying?

Indigenous peoples in the Philippines are often stereotyped as being uneducated. With government services centralized in towns and cities, ethnic groups in upland, remote areas have the least access to education, health and social welfare services, and infrastructure. This documentary tells the story of an Aeta family’s struggle to step away from illiteracy. 35-year-old Joseph Liwanag is father to seven children. Unschooled and doing hard labor for most of his life, he intends to change his children’s future. Dreaming is for everyone, they say, but every day, Joseph faces the reality that his hard work is not enough. His older children Karen, Gelyn and Mauwe need to help him make a living, by hauling the bamboos Joseph gathers down the steep terrain. The task is hard, especially for these little girls, but Mauwe, barely four feet tall, is more than willing to do it for her family’s sake. Everyone’s hard work supports the family’s main goal: to have the children finish their education. At the end of every day, after a day of back-breaking work, Joseph tries to learn the alphabet from his daughter, Karen. This story of overcoming social inequality has inspired I-Witness’ national and international viewers. The perseverance of the Liwanag family is simply humbling.

The Internet is one of the greatest inventions of our time. It’s enabled us to access information like never before; with one click we are able to connect with friends from halfway around the world. But with its immense benefits also come great risks. The Internet has enabled pedophiles to abuse children without having to step outside their homes. According to the FBI, an estimated 750,000 people are looking to engage in sexual activities with children at any given time online. Many of these children are in the Philippines. Assignment Asia’s Barnaby Lo met two teenage girls who were lured into the online sex trade when they were younger. They both come from poor families, so any chance to make some money was something they were not going to refuse. At first, they were told it was going to be harmless. They discover eventually that the job was going to take away their innocence, but it was too late. When confronted, their parents admit they had knowledge but did little to stop it. Meanwhile in a nearby town, authorities had discovered that parents themselves were directly involved - telling their children what to do, watching as men thousands of miles away preyed on their children. Despite a major raid in 2013, the town’s mayor admits the trade goes on.
This is why a Dutch NGO created Sweetie - a virtual Filipino girl who chats with pedophiles online and records their information. Sweetie and similar other characters has helped identified thousands. But it is only the first step in eradicating the problem; criminals continue to innovate, so authorities and communities need to stand together to fight child cybersex.
